What is a concussion?

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth.

  • Rest and take short breaks during the first 48 hours

  • Avoid light areas, stay in more dimmer spots

  • Avoid continuing sports for the time being

Exercises to prevent injuries!

besides being more careful, you can also practice stretching.

Gentle Neck Rotations

  • Keep your head still

  • Look at an object about 10 feet away for 20-30 seconds

  • Then look across the room

  • Repeat 3-5 times

Eye & Neck Rest

  • Sit or stand tall with your back straight and your shoulders relaxed.

  • Keep your chin level and look straight ahead.

  • Slowly turn your head to the right until you feel a light stretch along the side of your neck.

  • Hold the position for 5 to 10 seconds.

  • Return to the center slowly.

  • Turn your head to the left and hold for 5 to 10 seconds.

  • Repeat 3 to 5 times on each side.

Common Questions

Do you have to get knocked out to have a concussion?
No! Less than 5% of concussions involve someone losing consciousness. Most happen while the person stays wide awake.

If you feel fine right after the hit, are you good to keep playing?
No! Symptoms can take minutes or even hours to show up. Continuing to play puts your brain at risk for much severe damage.
